Punk Rock was usually used to describe garage bands of the 60s who didn't really know the laws of music. That gave them a chance to break the rules.

Bands like the Stooges and MC5 appeared in Detroit in the late 60s "They were raw, crude and often politcal."-punkmusic.about.com. That resulted in their concerts being very violent and eye opening to the music world the Velvet Underground often made music closer to just noise and expaneded the definitions of music without a thought.

The main influence of punk rock is found in the foundation of glam rock. Artists like David Bowie and the New York Dolls dressed extravagantly and lived outragously making loud and unique music rock and roll. Soon glam would split up it's influence with hair metal and punk rock.

The first major punk rock scene was in New York in the mid 1970s when bands like Blondie, The Ramones, The Talking Heads and much more bands started playing at the most popular club CBGB. New York was doing great, but in England that was a different story.

England's punk roots came from politics and the economy. At the time England had a poor economy, causing the youth to be angry, rebellious and jobless. The style appeared in no time. Soon the Sex Pistols came along and everyone got the idea that anyon can be in a punk tock band.

Punk rock was officially a genre by the late 1970s and soon split into mutiple subgenres as it became more popular with more subgenres to come.
